Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Stands with Chick-fil-A: A Message from the President

Recently Dan Cathy, the president of Chick-fil-A, gave an interview where he affirmed what the Bible clearly teaches about marriage. His comments were positive and gracious, but they have been met with an unprecedented attack from those who have a same-sex marriage agenda. There have been gross misrepresentations of what Dan actually said, protests and threatened boycotts of one of the finest restaurant chains in America in terms of products, service, and values.

I am personally thankful for Dan Cathy and the Cathy family for taking a stand that reflects their biblical convictions. They have done so with grace and kindness. Further, they discriminate against no one in their service. Anyone is welcome to frequent their restaurants. To imply anything different is simply dishonest.

August 1 has been designated as “National Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.” Former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has urged those of us who appreciate the excellent food and service of Chick-fil-A to show our support by stopping by next Wednesday to buy something and also to express our appreciation. Charlotte and I intend to do both, and let me encourage you to do the same. Additionally, I would encourage you to make visiting Chick-fil-A a regular occurrence on your schedule!

This entire situation is a sad commentary on the moral slide of our nation and the “bully politics” that too often rears its ugly head. It is one thing to be a hatemonger and seek the hurt of another. It is something altogether different to take a gracious stand, rooted in biblical conviction, that only wants the best for another, and be labeled as intolerant and a bigot. The intolerance of those screaming for tolerance has become deafening. It is also, in many instances, dishonest.

Charlotte’s and my affection for Chick-fil-A goes back a long way. On our wedding night, May 27, 1978, we stopped by the original “Dwarf House” in Hapeville, GA for dinner. It was a great way to begin! And, just a few years ago, my dad died of a massive stroke as he was walking into a Bible Study class at FBC Jonesboro, GA. One of the members of that class was Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A. My dad was a member of that class less than a year, but was treated with love, respect and concern by Truett and the other men in the class.

These are interesting times. We must ask God to grant us wisdom, grace, conviction and steadfastness. As Ephesians 4:15 admonishes us, we must “speak the truth in love.” So, let’s speak. Let’s speak the truth. And, let’s make sure we always do so in love. The gospel demands it. Jesus expects it. The world needs it.

Thank you for clearly stating how so many Christians feel. We don’t have much of a voice in mass media.

    Interesting times indeed.

    Amen, Danny!

Amen! I love Chick-fil-a to start with and will support them even more now. God bless them for stating the truth.

To start, I mean no disrespect by posting the following question and assume since this posting is on a publicly available site and has a comment area anyone is permitted to comment or ask a questIon. Are the attacks and threats of boycotts you’re referring to the same type of attacks and boycotts the Southern Baptist had against Disney and AT&T for offering same-sex partner benefits? If they are similar, with the exception of one being pro traditional Christian views versus against than does the phrase ‘bully politics’ apply to both situations or might it actually apply to neither? Could it possibly be civilized citizens of a free society expressing drastically divergent views and exercising freedom of choice?

If we read the Biblical account in Genesis 19, we’ll find
out that our God ( Hebrews 13:8 )
NEVER changes His mind and His answer then was the same as now.

I can’t believe I went to this school. So disappointed in myself for sitting under educators who would openly proclaim this nonsense.
