Toward a Great Commission Resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention: A Declaration

Many of us have been praying for almost two years for a Great Commission Resurgence in the SBC as the next step in the reformation of the Convention that began with the Conservative Resurgence. Momentum has been building as growing numbers of Southern Baptists have become energized by the dream of a new era of intradenominational cooperation around Christ’s command to make disciples of all nations. By God’s grace, it now appears that 2009, the 400th anniversary of the Baptist movement, will also mark the beginning of a Great Commission Resurgence in the SBC.

Under the leadership of SBC President Johnny Hunt, this morning a Great Commission Resurgence website has been launched. The central piece of the site is a document titled “Toward a Great Commission Resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention: A Declaration.” There is a place on the site for all sympathetic Southern Baptists to sign the Declaration. There are already several names, including some very well-known Southern Baptist leaders. We at BtT want to urge you to support the GCR vision for the SBC by signing the declaration. We also want to encourage you to attend the 2009 SBC Annual meeting in Louisville, where the GCR will take center stage. Lord willing, we will see you there.

Do you find it odd that there is no “Commitment” in this document which actually speaks about the Great Commission? One would think that a resurgence of the Great Commission would be an explicit statement regarding World Missions/Outreach/etc in its key document. Am I missing something?
